Tips for writing an effective resume

A resume is a written compilation of your education, work experience, credentials, and accomplishments and is used to apply for jobs.”

This is one of the simplest and appropriate definition of resume. But is writing a resume equally simple? Yes it is …all you have to do is follow the tips given below while writing your resume.

 1.       One page is no more the rule.

The one page rule doesn’t hold valid for resumes now . Don’t try to readjust your font or margin settings trying to sum up your past credentials and experiences in 1-2 pages. Today, 2-3 pages resumes are not uncommon, thanks to electronic resumes, which enable hiring manager or recruiter to go through the resume pages just by scrolling down  the screen.

2.        Choose professional font and write in bullets.

Arial and Helvetica are the best font for resume. The make your resume look more clean and  professional. Also, instead of paragraphs, write your experience and job role in bullets. It makes it presentable and easy to read .

3.        Use of summary

Summary is more relevant than objective. A well written summary states your career highlights and expertise that makes your apt for the job.  It presents the employer a better picture of the applicant. An objective on the other hand only states professional desire.

4.        Including right keywords.

Select the right key word to write your job profile and work description, qualification and accomplishments. Electronic resume search is largely dependent on key word choices.

 5.  Provide working mobile number, e-mail address and current location on resume. Providing your complete address on resume isn’t necessary. A obvious reason for doing this is because recruiters consider location constrain while contacting prospective candidates.

 6.       Customized resumes are more effective.

Though one-for-all resume is a flexible option, customized resume play the trick when it comes to resume short listing.  A customized resume specifically highlights the experience relevant to the job one is applying for.

7.        “References available on request”  – A big NO

It is not required to include this tag-line in your resume. Internet has made our world small. With Google, Google+, Linkedin etc , a prospective employer can easily check references anytime, anywhere.

8. Write in plain English, selecting relevant technical and functional terms. Avoid the use of first person pronoun and I-statement.

Example – Instead of writing “I managed a team of 4 executives working as lead”

Write  – “Successfully managed a team of 4 executives…”

These tips are based on resume writing guidelines by HR and hiring experts. Hope they are helpful.
